robot not returning data from callbacks or other functions

So, when I type in "robot.detect()",  or "robot.name()", I get no results.  Lua just accepts the command and returns a new line... no error message or any text returned.  Likewise, if I tell the robot to move and it's way is blocked it will not return any Boolean expression.  I can get the robot to actually obey commands.  So I can get it to move and swing and place.  I'm using vanilla Open Computers on 1.10.2 Skyblock 3.

=robot.detect()

 

or

 =robot.name() 

 

adding the "=" will make the interpreter print the result to the console, otherwise it just eats it.
